Wikipedia?

Did anyone catch the news that the Encyclopaedia Britannica is stopping production on its print edition?  I found that odd that it took such a long time for them to focus on digital alone. Plus, you don't really need any other encyclopaedias nowadays when you have Wikipedia.

I have to admit, I love Wikipedia. I think it's an amazing idea, and a great source of information on almost anything. Just today I was reading about the Leviathan (a sea serpent who's also one of the seven highest demons), to demonology, to fallen angels. I think it's a great source of general knowledge- there's so much information on Wikipedia!

In uni, we're not allowed to use sources from Wikipedia as it's seen as unreliable (since anyone can edit it), but I still use it nonetheless- for background reading and to see if the link sources are still in existence. I mean, sometimes we students are just given some technical terms that we have no idea what's it about, and the thing is, academic journals assume that you already know what the term means, so you're pretty much clueless. And that's why I use Wikipedia- I love the simple explanations at the beginning of every entry.

Bet you tried that didn't you?

But also, because of Wikipedia, I now enjoy having a physical factual book to read- for example, reading a book about Greek mythology suddenly becomes a novelty because I've only ever read it on Wikipedia, or in bookstores (without buying the book of course).

So I completely understand the Encyclopaedia Britannica's decision to focus on their digital side- I mean, digital is always much more efficient. But I do wonder, who on Earth still uses it? I can only remember ever seeing the Encyclopaedia back in uni in Adelaide, and even then it was an old version that needed to be taken care of properly.

I would love to just be able to sit down and browse through Wikipedia entries and seeing where that takes me. It's such a treasure! But unfortunately, we're all busy people who don't have time to do anything other than work.

The same can be said of me- even now I am about to publish this, I also have other work lined up, like coming up with a research topic and questions for a mini thesis that I have to write this semester. And that is why I'm stopping here.

Have a great week ahead!
